The model was originally positioned as a personal luxury car, and typically offered in both coupe and sedan forms until 1997, when the Regal became sedan-only due to the decline of the personal luxury coupe market. A new model of the Buick Regal was introduced in 2018 and it was offered in a liftback sedan and a "TourX" station wagon style. General Motors discontinued the Regal in the North American market after the 2020 model year, making Buick exclusively a CUV marque there. With a number of different generations, the look of the Regal has certainly changed over the years. The fifth-generation Buick Regal is a four-door, five-passenger, midsized sedan with a front engine, front-wheel drive layout. According to GM published information, more than 41% of Regal buyers in the US are coming from non-General Motors brands, and more than 60% of CXL Turbo buyers are under the age of 55.
