The car has been in production by the Ford Motor Company since 1998 and it began in North America during 1999 for the 2000 model year. The Focus took the place of the Ford Escort and it ended up exceeding the very popular Toyota Corolla to become the World's Best Selling Automobile Nameplate. The Ford Focus has also been considered one of the 50 Greatest Cars of the Past 50 Years by the British Magazine, CAR. The car's first generation was produced in 1998, its second generation in 2004, its third generation in 2011 and its fourth generation in 2018. The Focus has also been used in rallies and in the SCCA Speed World Challenge Touring Car Series, the TC 2000, resulting champion in 2003, 2005, 2010, and 2012.
