These models were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with the Chrysler Corporation. In Japan, the car's first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third generation of the Eclipse (3G) shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In 1996, a convertible body style was added to the line up. In May, 2005, the fourth and final generation of the Eclipse was debuted and it replaced the Chrysler platform used in the first three generations with the PS platform. The Eclipse name was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that had won 26 races, according to Mitsubishi Motors. Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name in 2017 with a compact crossover vehicle, titled the Eclipse Cross. The Cross debuted at the Geneva Auto Show in 2017.
